to the Los Angeles Chapter of the Ninth & Tenth
(Horse) Cavalry Association website, this organization
shall exist for the purpose of carrying out the
objectives of the Association non-profit, educational,
patriotic military service organization, which shall
remain non-partisan and non-political.

The History of the 10th Cavalry
Regiment. The 10th Cavalry was formed
at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas in 1866. Very high
standards of recruitment were set by the
regiment's commander. By the end of July 1867
eight companies of enlisted men had been
recruited. This was the beginning of the 10th
Cavalry Regiment later to be named "Buffalo
Soldiers", motto: "Ready
and Forward".

The
History of the 9th Cavalry Regiment. The
9th Cavalry was formed in New Orleans, Louisiana
in August 3, 1866 by orders of Gen Phillip
Sheridan, was authorized to raise one regiment
of "colored" cavalry. The new recruits
came from Louisville, Kentucky. They were
ex-Civil War veterans. Enlistment was for 5
years, with recruits receiving 13 dollars a
month, plus room, board, and clothing. They
later on were named "Buffalo
Soldiers", motto: "We Can, We
Will"
